Skeletal System Nutrition

The living cells in the skeletal system needs two types of nutrients; Macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats) and Micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). Macronutrients provide energy to the cells that are needed in a large quantity. Proteins are found in meats, fish, and cheese. Carbohydrates are found in sugars, candies, and dried fruit. Fats are found in butter, coconuts, and chocolate. Micronutrients help cells to produce the products they make in order to fulfill skeletal function (vitamins), and form the basis of the bony matrix of your skeleton (minerals). Calcium plays a very important role in the skeletal system, it is one of the main ingredients used to make bone. It is found in dark leafy greens, cheese, and milk. Vitamin D is also important because it helps you move dietary calcium into the bloodstream for uptake by the bones. Without vitamin D, your bones will become very weak. It is found in oily fish, mushrooms, and fortified cereals.
